| Exeter Inn · Church Street · Modbury · Devon · PL21 0QR | |

This is the oldest surviving Inn in Modbury and was a popular meeting place for the Royalists during the 17th century. It was built in the 14th century with later additions in the 19th century. It has retained a unique decorative plaster ceiling on the first floor. A stream runs under the building. The Exeter Inn is an outstanding public house located in the elegant little town of Modbury, on the A379 between Plymouth and Kingsbridge. Once a coaching inn, with origins going back to the 14th century, its bay-windowed frontage is adorned in spring and summer with a colourful show of flowers in tubs and hanging baskets. The rambling interior is equally delightful at any time of year, with flagstones, beams, an open fire in a hooded hearth and interesting period pictures and prints. At the back of the inn is a secluded garden with tables and chairs surrounded by flowers and shrubs, and a partly covered patio area. Tenants Michelle and Paul, who took over the lease towards the end of 2007, have lost no time in building up a good local following by offering the very best in hospitality, beer, food and accommodation. The bar is open throughout the day, seven days a week, for a full range of drinks, which include five well-kept real ales - Bass, Sharps Doom Bar, Tetley Dark, Greene King Abbot Ale and a rotating guest - and Addlestones and Thatchers ciders. Food is available 12.00 to 3.00pm and 6.00pm to 9.00pm and a blackboard lists the day's dishes, based whenever possible on local, seasonal ingredients. A typical selection might include sandwiches with assorted fillings; whitebait with tartare sauce; filo-wrapped tiger prawns with a sweet chilli sauce; turkey, ham & leek pie; gammon; lasagne and sausages & mash with onion gravy. There's always a vegetarian dish of the day, a children's menu, a specials menu and a dessert menu. It's best to book on Sunday, when the menu features traditional roasts. Families with children are welcome, and the inn accepts the major credit cards. |

Set back in the Avon River hillside, this unique Mediteranean style restaurant is pure escapism. Completely alfresco in the summer months, the atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and quirky. Whether you are ordering half-a-dozen oysters au naturel and a glass of champagne for two or ordering from the extensive seafood menu for a large party enjoying jugs of cocktails in the summer sun, The Oyster Shack offers an unparalled experience. Friendly, laid-back staff are charming and very knowledgable about the menu capping off a truely memorable restaurant. Adopting the formula which encourages a relaxed atmosphere, what with its simple yet effective ‘Mediterranean' theme décor, the Oyster Shack is a unique dining experience. We appreciate that the market is demanding simple local produce and unhurried atmospheres. Eating local food allows the diner to experience the great flavours and freshness of the restaurants surrounding area, but also provides great assurance to our business, that we are contributing to the local landscape and economy.
